Overlooked but essential advice please:
This may sound really silly but now taking little ones and grandma with me on a long day trip, my concern is making sure there are decent WCs in the area!
I have heard some horror stories - filthy toilets, hole in the ground, etc. Am I worrying for nothing? Grateful for any advice.
By the way, I have had the advantage of staying in hotel, chalets, many times in France. A Day trip does not have that advantage!

Lucinda.... this is the very essence of the existence of McDonalds :o)
Clean, free bathroom facilities visible for miles. There is at least ONE McDonalds (hubby thinks there are a few more) - that is on the motorway side of the city. I have used it!!
There are also free bathrooms (you don%26#39;t have to enter through the pay booths to use them) in Nausicaa Aquarium which is very close to the Hovercraft landing point, and ON the promenade.

I am sure there are some, and I am sure they are no worse than in the UK (which may nor be a recommendation..)
Thing is, though, I can%26#39;t remember actually seeing any. I assume there are some at the beach parking place(near Nausicaa) and in the old town. If all else fails, you can have a coffee in a cafe while gran take the kids to the lavvy.....

Thank you for the advice - as a last resort - a Macdonalds visible for miles sounds hopeful!! especially for the kids.At least it will be a %26#39;French%26#39; MacDonalds :-)
Made a note of Nausicaa.
I agree, that they are some probably no worse than in the UK and I would avoid them! In a foreign town, it will not so easy to avoid! But excellent reccomendation for Cafe stops - while gran visits the lavvy!
So simple, why didnt i think of that!
I am sure there are plenty of good cafes!
