Montpellier for a week - where else to go??

My husband is traveling to Montpellier for a week. I want to see as much of France as possible. I am very comfortable traveling on my own for the day by train. Where else should I go? How long does it take to go places like Paris or Monte Carlo?

I am a photographer, so feel free to suggest any out of the way area as long as it would make great pictures and I can get there by train.

Thanks in advance.

I have stayed in Montpellier and the area. It is a nice city with a large University. There is a good tram (light-rail) network which allows you to explore the city and its fairly pleasant suburbs.

Paris is 3 1/2 half hour away by TGV high speed train so you would have to get up pretty early to make a day.

Monaco/Monte Carlo is around 5 hours away (not very high speed!).

Nimes is a very historic city (Van Gogh and the Roman Amphitheatre) and only a 30 minute journey on local trains. Marseilles can be reached in about 2 hours.

Avignon (sur le pont and all that) is a 1 hour journey.

Carcassonne (I have never been there but people say it is worth a visit) is about 1 1/2 half hours from Montpellier.

For long-distance trains go to www.voyages-sncf.com and use the search facility. You can reserve tickets on-line and even have them delivered to your home address.

The local train services at Montpellier to Nimes, Avignon etc can be viewed at

ter-sncf.com/languedoc/…

in French only, naturellement.

The trains marked TGV require advance reservation (reservation obligatoire)as do many of the trains marked Corail or Teoz.

If you wanted to head inland your options are rather limited, as train service is a little sparse but the line from Beziers towards Clermont Ferrand has some pleasant scenery. With some careful planning you could do something.

Enjoy your trip.

Sorry forgot.

Millau is on the line from Beziers to Clermont Ferrand. Some friends who drove across the bridge said it was so high it was in the clouds!

Hi Sassu,

Aigues Mortes is a beautiful medieval walled town about 10 min drive from Montpellier. As a photographer, you wont be disappointed. L%26#39;Espiguette beach near Le Grau Du Roi would give great photo opportunities. Also, from Montpellier, about an hour%26#39;s drive maybe is Le Pont Du Gard, near Uzes. It%26#39;s a Roman Aquaduct, a Unesco site, a %26quot;must see%26quot;. Hope this helps. B
