I%26#39;m taking my 2 children to Villefranche 7-14 April and have arranged a hire car from Nice airport. I%26#39;m wondering what the parking situation will be like and considering whether there%26#39;s any point with the hire car. Should I cancel it and use trains and buses?

You won%26#39;t have any trouble parking in Villefranche in April, although how close you can get does depend on precisely where you are staying. There is quite a bit of street parking and a large, free car park at the Citadel. If all else fails, there is substantial pay parking at the sea front.
The usefulness of a car depends very much on where you want to go. Buses cover the coast and cost one euro per trip and the train is not much more expensive. I spend quite a bit of time in Villefranche and prefer not to have a car unless I need to transport something heavy or go inland, where public transport is sparse.
If you intend to spend most of your time in and around Villefranche, with occasional trips to places such as Nice and Monaco, I would say forget the car.

I absolutely support LondonBob%26#39;s views and advice.
My experience of one week in Villefranche was exactly that :-)
Public transport is the way to go - much less stressful!

Not to mention, I just got back from there...rented a car for a day to drive to Aix en Provence...used half a tank of diesel.
HALF A TANK of diesel for the whole trip....
the cost to refill? $68.17 US
for half a tank of diesel.

Do you know where you will be staying in VF? Public transportation is great and having a car can be a hazzle. But, if you happen to have an apartment higher up in Villefranche near the Moyenne Corniche (Middle Corniche), you will have a bit of a walk down hill to the train and the more frequent bus. (and back up). If you are near the old town or port - no need for a car.

trav4 makes a good point. There are places within the area called Villefranche where you will need ropes and crampons to climb back up from the beach; an exaggeration but it certainly can be a steep climb of a mile or so.
