Thanks for tolerating my indecision. You have all been so helpful. If I decide to drive out of Paris %26quot;using a well planned exit route%26quot; I need to avoid the infamous traffic circle at l%26#39;Arc de Triomph. BUT when I type in the address of the rental car pick up (99 rue de rivoli) and type in my destination (honfleur) - every map site (yahoo, michelin, google, mapquest) sends me straight to that circle. How can I get better/different directions?

First of all, it%26#39;s not *that* bad. Second, there is another, smaller ring outside of the roundabout at the Etoile. If you turn just before you get there, you%26#39;ll be on that ring. You%26#39;ll have to stop about every 100 meters (maybe I exaggerate), but it%26#39;s completely low-stress and easy. The road is called rue de Presbourg or rue de Tilsitt, depending on which direction you%26#39;ll be coming from.
Look at this map:

Change to the Hertz office at Gare du Nord. Two turns out of the garage and a straight shot to the Porte de la Chapelle.

OK, thanks for that. I saw that on my map, but wasn%26#39;t sure about it. Now, would I be better to drive out Monay morning after the Hertz office opens (say 10:00) or Sunday afternoon? Hertz is open until 1:00. I can still change my hotel reservations. Thanks.

Thanks, Franco - I%26#39;ll check on that. I was trying to avoid long taxi ride from the hotel. I can walk to the other one, but will definitely take a look at it.
|||
It%26#39;s probably a bit easier on Sunday afternoon. Honestly, if you can drive in Baltimore, you can drive in Paris, if you have explicit directions from one of the map sites and a decent navigator.

At the Gare du Nord, the rental offices are on the lower level, east side, and the cars are right below in the garage. Coming out of the garage, you make two right turns, passing over the tracks, then left on the first street [rue Marx Dormoy]. That leads straight to the Porte de la Chapelle--use that as the starting point on Michelin or Mappy driving directions.
