Does anyone know how I can order two airline tickets (with Delta), paying separately for the two tickets, so they%26#39;re each on a separate account, but ensure that the 2 seats are together? If I call someone to order the tickets over the phone, and have both account numbers with me, can they do that?

I%26#39;m sure they could do that, if you have all the necessary information when you call. If you and the other person can be in the same place at the same time when making the call, it will be easier. I would suggest giving the reservations number a call, explaining that you want to book two tickets for people who are paying separately but want to sit together, and ask for their advice.
The altnerative would be to do both over the internet (on some sites, the card that%26#39;s being charged must match the passenger name, so be careful about that). Then, as soon as both tickets are booked, you could call or (if both passengers have frequent flyer numbers) you could go on line to both passengers%26#39; accounts (preferably side by side, so you could see both) and select the seats. To do it this way, you might want to first make sure you%26#39;re choosing a flight with plenty of seats, so you don%26#39;t get two tickets on a flight that only has three seats, all in the middle and seven rows apart!

Can%26#39;t you choose your seats? When I ordered online I was given that option.

I guess I%26#39;m just concerned that there won%26#39;t be two seats together open on the flight we want, and by the time we see the seating chart we%26#39;ll already have purchased the tickets and be stuck.
Does the seating chart usually come up before you enter in credit card number and such?

You can see how many seats are available as soon as you put your schedule in and get the list of possible flight choices. There is usually a link that reads %26quot;view seats%26quot; or something like that. But certainly you can see the options before you pay. I booked 2 seats for us and 2 for family for a flight to Italy, so I first checked and made some notes of blocks of 4 seats that we%26#39;d like, then did the actual reservations.

Good advice, above. I would just add that you can book the two together, and, if you mean Skymiles by %26quot;accounts%26quot;, you can enter both FF numbers. I%26#39;d try to do it online, and then call to request seats together if you can%26#39;t get them online. I suggest this because there%26#39;s a fee to book with a live person, but not for booking online or for calling with a follow-up request.
One additional caveat: When you%26#39;re booking, be sure you know if the flight you want is %26quot;on DL metal%26quot;, meaning Delta%26#39;s own aircraft. Delta %26quot;codeshares%26quot; with Air France, and it could be a AF plane. If so, even though to your eyes the flight bears a DL number, it isn%26#39;t the same, and sometimes you can%26#39;t even reserve seats. They may be %26quot;requested%26quot;, but not guaranteed. If you are met with the latter situation, try to select a flight that%26#39;s on DL. That would be the biggest potential %26quot;slip %26#39;twixt cup and lip%26quot;. Hint: Codeshares are usually designated with a four-digit flight number.
