Hello all,
I am travelling to Paris on the 14th for five nights and we are staying in the 13th, Rue Du Veronese near Place d%26#39;Italie. I know this is not the most central of areas, but we decided to sacrifice location for a great budget price! We are near two metro lines so i%26#39;m not too worried about getting around, i%26#39;m just wondering what the area is like. Is it ok safety wise at night? Does is have any %26#39;Parisien charm%26#39;? I just ask because no-one else on this forum ever seems to stay there!

It is a very cool area - Chinatown is very near and the Butte aux Cailles area is very Parisien, not many tourists at all, with great bars and restaurants. I have several friends living in the 13th and they are vey happy with their quartier.

Remember, you can go %26#39;look%26#39; at a street by putting addresses here:

There will be some modern apartment or office buildings mixed in here and there but it is still %26quot;Paris%26quot;. You have 3 metro lines, not just 2. Not to mention bus lines. There are all the neigborhood necessities (cafes, shops, grocer, etc).

Very handy for Manufacture des Gobelins and Jardin des Plantes, also the art at Institut du Monde Arabe - it%26#39;s an area that not too many casual tourists know about, so enjoy the extra space! There is a good street market in Rue Mouffetard.

Yep, cool area with Chinatown, Rue Mouffetard not so far, Place d%26#39;Italie and its mall... Place d%26#39;Italie line 6 of the subway tales you to Champs Elysees and Trocadero, and, an advise, enjoy the wonderful view of the Seine while in the subway between Dupleix and Trocadero !
It%26#39;s a cool area, not very touristic but cool !

Hmmm. I wouldn%26#39;t say it has %26#39;Parisien Charm%26#39;. I don%26#39;t recall any pretty little sidewalk cafes, cobblestones, nice landscaping, gardens, or fountains for example. At least I didn%26#39;t see any walking from the metro to the restaurant my Chinese friend wanted to try out.
However, you%26#39;re in a safe area with the necessities, easy to get to the major sites.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the replies (that website with photos is great travelnutty). I%26#39;m just happy to know the area isn%26#39;t a complete dump, and afterall, I can get my fill of charm walking around the 5th and 6th, crepe in hand... I can%26#39;t wait!

The place d%26#39;Italie isn%26#39;t charming to look at, but very safe, and the Avenue des GObelins has those stone buildings typical of Paris. I liva ten minutes from it, it is nice and safe. From place d%26#39;Italie to Opéra on métro line 7 is just 15 minutes so not bad at all. You also have bus 27 to go to the Sainte Chapelle, Notre Dame, and the Louvre and Opéra.

I stayed there my second time to Paris, back in 1984, it was a friendly neighborhood, my friend %26amp; I met a lot of really great people. There were a lot of Arab hotels and cafes there then. I was there in Sept. we went to an AMAZING Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown, it%26#39;s the real Paris that most tourists don%26#39;t bother to see. I really like the area, for some reason. And it is convenient to the touristy part of Paris. Do check out Chinatown. wish I could remember the name of the Viet place we went to -- there were lines out the door it was only 6 pm or so, so you should be able to figure it out.

I stayed near the Place d%26#39;Italie in, what was it - %26#39;77? %26#39;78? Before, I believe, the Chinese influx. While the ethnic character of the neighborhood may have changed since then, I would disagree with those who say it is not charming. It seemed perfectly charming to me, and not touristy.
