Help plan a driving route from Sarlat to Nice for 4 days.

Hi all you Sarlat lovers,

We need help with an itinerary that includes a 4 day drive from Sarlat to Nice. We would prefer to drive through the mountains rather than on the express road leading to Toulouse - if it is possible. We would love to explore the small towns and villages on our way to Nice. Thanx in advance!

Hi

Depending on the places you are planning to visit from Sarlat, there are a couple of ways you could head through to Nice.

1. Connect with the N20 at Souillac and drive south to Cahors. From here I suggest taking the very scenic route east along the River Lot - don%26#39;t neglect a stop at St Cirq Lapopie - as far as Carjac and then up past Figeac and on to the upper Lot Valley and the Gorges du Lot. There are some lovely villages in this region (Conques, Entregues-sur-Truyere, Estaing, Espalion. From this part of the Aveyron take the road from Rodez to hook up with the autoroute A75 (no toll) just north of Millau and experience the amazing Millau Viaduct - stop off at the vantage points which are well signposted. You can hook off this road to the A750 which will take you past Montpelier and through to Avignon - a great small city and close to the Pont du Gard, the hilltop towns of Les Baux de Provence, Gordes, Roussillon etc. You could drive a route taking in these villages and then join up with the A8. At Exit 13 I can recommend driving through the coastal range to Port Grimaud (D558), check out the Bay of St Tropez and then take the coast road through St Maxime, Frejus, St Raphael, Antheor, Theoule-sur-Mer and on to Nice. You can hook up with the autoroute A8 from Theoule if you wish to avoid the heavy traffic through Cannes and Antibes before arriving in Nice. In Nice take a trip up Mt Boron for great views over the city and up into the hills to the village of Eze (very touristy but worth a visit). Check out all the routes on viamichelin.com - the green shaded roads are the scenic routes. We love the countryside of France - there is a photo opportunity around every corner!

2. Another interesting route through France from Sarlat is to follow the Dordogne up to Mauriac, through Beaulier-sur-Dordogne, then head across to St Flour and le Puy-en-Velay. From here take the road south to Pradelles and Aubenas in the Ardeche region before joining the A7 to Avignon.

Hope these suggestions give you some ideas. Check out the website les-plus-beaux-villages-de-France.org for some exquisite places to visit. Many are in the southwest regions of France.

Happy travelling

Anni

Dear Anni,

We love your ideas. They are a godsend! We were having such a difficult to plan. Most of this area is new to us. All we had was a dry map and official tourist web sites. So your e-mail tells it all. Your descriptions and experience tells us that we thing alike. We have visited a few of the places you mentioned (including Avignon, Eze) and have felt the same amazement at the beauty. We think alike! Thank you for taking the time to send such a wonderful e-mail (and for typing all of those difficult town names). Reading it makes us feel we are already there, and we can hardly wait. We appreciate your sense of the country and sharing with fellow travelers.

Your fellow lover of france, hilly 64
