This is our (my husband and I) first trip to Paris! We are in our mid-30s and are past the club / bar scene. If anyone is familiar with NYC, think more Gramercy and Greenwich village. Definitely NOT Times Square!!
I%26#39;ve found some apartment rentals in our budget and would like some opinions on which is the best to take given since we know nothing about these neighbhorhoods.
%26gt; 3rd eme - Rue Michel le comte (right off R. Beaubourg and close to the Pompidou center.) I see some graffiti on the bldgs in pictures on this street - a concern?
%26gt; 3rd eme - Rue de Poitou
%26gt; 6th eme - Rue de Buci at Bd. St. Germain (worth it to pay more to walk to the Seine?)
%26gt; 5th eme - Rue des Ecoles (near Rue. de Montagne St. Genevieve)
Thanks all in advance!

The locations are all good.
Rue de Buci is my favorite though : food street, very lively, filled with cafés with a terrasse, could be a bit noisy at night, i don%26#39;t know, unless it overlooks the courtyard. Definitely charming...I would love to live there. Lots of restaurants as you step out.I wouldn%26#39;t be concerned about the graffiti, even nice buildings may get one. It is a good area.

Rue de Buci can be a little noisy and too crowded. I prefer rue des Ecoles.
I love to eat at Brasserie Balzar at off hours.
Rue de Poitou: no for apartment.
Rue Michel Le comte: no for apartment either when you have 2 first choices.

Although I can%26#39;t really offer advice on the 3eme, I thing your other 2 choices are both excellent. However, I concur with those who recommend Rue de Buci. Our family stayed on Rue St. Andre des Arts a few years ago, near where it becomes Rue de Buci. Although it%26#39;s true there was street noise at night, we really loved this neighborhood and thought the benefits outweighed this disadvantage. If your bedroom is not on the street side, then you will have the best of both worlds! The street scene is lively, and not all tourists by any means. There are great boulangeries/patisseries in the neighborhood, a nice street market, and you%26#39;re walking distance to several other markets. We loved this central location; wandering along the Seine in the evening is one of our most pleasant memories of that trip. Although lively, it%26#39;s definitely not Times Square. A busy street in Greenwich Village seems an apt comparison, so you should feel right at home!
Having said all this, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;d also be happy on the rue des Ecoles. Also a great area.

For a first trip I think your 2 apts in the 5th and 6th beat the location of the other 2.

Gosh this is proving to be so difficult! We will be doing TONS of sight-seeing and will be using the metro a lot I reckon. I know the metro runs everywhere but I started thinking that the 3rd eme (since it was close to the Les Halles station which is a huge station) would be good for that. Looking at the guide books, since we are 2 blocks northeast of the Pompideau Center, the Rue Michel apt. is on the outskirts of the Beaubourg neighbhorhood? Is this area a wasteland?
I am a little worried about the 6th eme apartment. While I certainly can appreciate having a good choice of restaurants and bars I%26#39;m wondering if it would be tiresome to navigate through the throngs of people %26amp; noise to get some rest at the Rue de Buci apt. every night. Plus I think while the apt is on the 5th floor it looks directly over the main intersection - too noisy?
Is the neighborhood in the 5th around Rue des Ecoles the same? I wonder if it is a little collegiate since there are a lot of colleges around there? (going back in time would be bad - lol!)
Ultimately, I would appreciate a place on a quiet street that is right around the corner of good eats.

Does anyone else wish to chime in?
I think I%26#39;ve since discovered that the 3rd eme place on is next door to a (gay) bar on 25 Rue Michel Le Comte. The apartment faces the inside courtyard so maybe that isn%26#39;t a problem?
How about the Ile de cite? Is it lacking in charm compared to Saint Louis? Would this be the best centralized location?

I also vote for the 5th or 6th. When posters use the word %26quot;lively%26quot; it doesn%26#39;t mean New Orleans during Mardi Gras. It just means there are restaurants, cafes and shops nearby. You%26#39;ll love the convenience.
Enjoy your trip!
