Inexpensive local places -11eme

This is my first trip to Paris and as much as I am looking forward to going to the Louvre and other main sights, I really enjoy walking and seeing the day by day life of the city when I travel. I am staying near Rue du Faubourg du Temple and Avenue Parmentier in the northern edge of the 11th, close to the Canal St. Martin - definitely not the touristic center. Are there any suggestions for inexpensive bistros, cafes, anything in this area moving toward the canal, Belleville and Oberkampf. Will my decidedly limited French be more of a problem as I move out from the very center of things? (sorry if this is a silly question)

I also will be staying in the 11th next month. I have been to Paris numerous times but have never stayed in this area. My Rick Steves%26#39; 2008 has a few cafes listed in your area but even more for the Oberkampf area. Send me a message if you are on a time crunch and I%26#39;ll send you more info. Good luck on your trip and I hope we will both be happy in the 11eme!
