Where to stay in Provence for 3 days?

We%26#39;re spending 3 nights in Provence (this is our first time here), and want a place that is a good location for us to drive and see area sites and visit Cotes du%26#39;Rhone vineyards during the day, but has a charming town to walk around with dining options for the evening.

Which would be the best place? Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Gordes, or Chataneuf-du-Pape? Recommendations on hotels? Many thanks.

In 2 weeks I%26#39;ll be traveling to Aix and Avignon, so if you%26#39;re traveling after April, I can write you and tell you from my experiences what I would recommend. It will be my first time too, so I%26#39;m not sure what to expect. In the meantime, good luck planning your trip!

I really think that you should consider St. Remy as a resting place. It is perfectly situated for visiting the wonderful Roman ruins and other historical sites of Provence and is but a relatively short hop-skip and a jump from the villages of the Cotes-du-Rhone.

While I cannot make any recommendations regarding hotels in the immediate area since we have been renting a house for the month of September for many years, I am sure that there are many other Forum members who will have suggestions.

For a first time visitor I recommend Avignon. Avignon is perhaps the city most centrally located to the most popular tourist destinations and itself contains important sites: the bridge and Palais des Papes. I should also include Arles or Aix-en-Provence to round out the top 3 bases for first time visitors.

The above sites list all of the hotel and restaurant choices in each city. All are charming to explore on foot(except the graffiti in Aix) and offer a wide range of dining options.

The main reason that I recommend St. Remy is that it is a %26quot;town%26quot; rather than a %26quot;city%26quot; like Avignon - and, as such, has a much more intimate and %26quot;provencal%26quot; ambiance.

But %26quot;chacun a son gout%26quot; - or, esentailly, to each his own.

NB: St.Remy is relatively equidistant, timewise, from Avignon and Arles.

I agree with AlpillesG, Avignon is useful if you haven%26#39;t got a care but St Remy is smaller and more intimate. And it%26#39;s got loads of great places to eat, all within ten minutes%26#39; walk.
