Hi,
my wife and I are thinking of basing ourselves in Chamonix during the summer(July) with a view to doing some walking, relaxing and maybe a few trips away to other places. We will fly to Geneva and take public transport to Chamonix.
Is the walking good in Chamonix and are there some nice places to see accessible by public transport in the local area? I dont fancy driving so will be reliant on public transport to get to walking trails and visiting nearby places etc
If anyone could recommend somewhere to stay either b%26amp;b or self-catering that would be great - clean and pleasant is more important than opulent luxury...
Thanks
Jon

Self catering try www.grand-roc.com.
They are based in Argentiere a really pretty villagfe about 6kms up the valley from Chamonix.

It%26#39;s amazing for walking - there%26#39;s some photos here:

Thanks for all the helpful posts guys. Chamonix in summer looks good and there seems to be plenty of nice self catering places.
How about public transport around the area? It looks like there are plenty of options to get from Geneva airport to Chamonix but how about buses etc in summer to travel around different places in the area - trains to go to other towns for the day etc.
What I am getting at is whether we will be stuck in Chamonix for a whole fortnight if we have no car.

Local trains go from Chamonix to Le Fayet from there you can get TGVs etc or the other way to Martigny in Switzerland.
There are bus trips etc check this out at www.chamonix.com.
Assuming you get half decent weather there is loads to do in the valley.
if it is precipitating then you might get cabin fever after 3 days so a plan BBB would be good.

Hi have had a look at self catering and the Clos Du Savoy apartment complex looks good and there are some deals 80 euros for a fortnight on Interhome which seems almost too good to be true - anyone stayed at the Clos Du S or used Interhome and would recommend/not recommend?

Jon
80Euros for 2 weeks is not enough. Check the price is not per night.
Try www.grand-roc.com for appartments in Argentiere. Not as busy as Chamonix and no parking problems.
|||
Sorry my typo I meant 800! 80 would be a REAL bargain...

My wife wants to stay in Chamonix itself so the grand roc places aren%26#39;t ideal. Personally I don%26#39;t mind but she who must be obeyed............

You can get around by bus and train, both around the valley and further afield, though a car gives you much more flexibility. The train ride through to Switzerland is pretty, and takes you to the baths at Finhaut, the open air pool and small zoo of Maracottes, and the town of Martigny with it%26#39;s roman amphitheatre and art gallery.
Try www.chamonixmazot.com for a central self catered place to stay.
