I have not been to Nice for 30 years (when i was 8!)and was wondering if people recommend it for a weeks holiday in August? Is the cost of living very expensive? Will we be able to get a decent hotel at a reasonable price in August? Basically i know bugger all about holidaying in the south of France so please fill me in.

Nice is a fabulous place for a holiday but August is not the best time to be going. July and Aug are the the months when the French move from the north to the south and it is very, very busy. It%26#39;s also the hottest month of the year so you need very good air con if you%26#39;re coming from Preston! If you can take the heat then go and have a fab time. The place will be busy but it will be a great atmosphere.
The cost of living is much less than the UK, even in August and you can eat and drink very cheaply. Transport in the area is amazing. Buses run the length of the Cote d%26#39;Azur and costs just 1 euro regardless of the length of the journey although be aware that journey times in August will be much longer than, say, September.
Can%26#39;t help you on hotel costs but you might think about renting a place for a week so you don%26#39;t have to eat out every night if you don%26#39;t want to. I would always recommend www.nicepebbles.com for apartments but you could look at www.holiday-rentals.co.uk in the area.
Hope you get there and have a great time. I love it.

I remember going to the south of France 30 years ago and thinking how expensive it was. Now, I am reluctant to stay in a hotel or eat out in the UK because it is so much more expensive than Nice.
I like the area in August. Weather is guaranteed to be hot and sunny. It is busy but not Blackpool busy and there is a complete absence of drunken yobs. The sea is a perfect temperature for swimming and there are plenty of quiet spots if you look for them. In Nice there are plenty of decent if not luxury hotels for around £50 a night for a double room. What would you find for that on the south coast of England?
There are more than 100 restaurants in Nice where a three course meal costs around a tenner and any amount of snack places a lot cheaper than that. Provided you like the heat, you will love it.

That is an %26#39;on the button%26#39; reply from LondonBob. No need to add to that.Nice is one of the most tourist friendly resorts we have been to and your euros go a long way if you avoid the main tourist traps eg Old Town.Budget hotel try Mercure Grimaldi but go for the package that includes the (expensive) breakfast/ Book direct with Mercure.A bit more expensive but miles ahead in quality Hotel Grimaldi.

Fantastic response! Thanks very much,my wife and i are very interested in visiting Nice and will be searching for accomodation ASAP. If any one does have a gem of a hotel that they are confident to recommend, please do.

To the poster who asked about a %26quot;gem%26quot; of a hotel: we have stayed at Le Grimaldi 4 times and have always been very happy. It has charm, good location and a wonderful staff.

We are OAPs and we go every July to Nice, not just because we love it but because it is so affordable. We really enjoy using the cheap public transport for trips out to villages like Eze and our evening entertainment of sitting on the Promenade people-watching is entirely free! We tend to go to the cheap touristy restaurants in the pedestrian areas but you soon find the ones which serve decent food and keep going back to them! We always take advice from this website for hotels, we always stay within the top half-dozen recommended hotels and they have all been lovely and so cheap, considering their locations, compared to the UK. Having said that we left it too late to book at the favourites this year so we are going to the Hotel Durante which has good reviews and we have seen where it is and its fine. We have also booked a room with a kitchenette which we have done before so that we do our own breakfasts and snacks when we want them. We prefer to do this but it also saves money! I think the hotel cost for a week is around £450 and the air fare for two from Stansted is £110. A week%26#39;s holiday in a fabulous place for under £600 for the two of us! I envy you going to Nice for the first time - it is wonderful.
