My wife and I will be in Munich for a few days and will have have only one day - Thursday, June 5th - to viit anther city. We were thinking about doing %26quot;Paris in a Day%26quot;. We found a Lufthansa flight that arrives at CDG at 10:30 AM and departs CDG at 9:15 PM. Considering Metro transit to city center (both ways) and having to be back at airport one hour before flight (no baggage), what could we take in to get some scenery and culture without wasting time or waiting in very long lines? I was thinking possibly: breakfast at a street cafe, Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, a scenic Seine River ride, early dinner at an authentic French restaurant, and back to airport. Is this possible? Any suggested itinerary, Metro lines, cafes, restaurants? June 5th is not any type of holiday there, is it? Would appreciate any and all suggestions...

The thought of maybe spending only 6 hours in Paris, if you have never been there before ... . How will you tear yourselves away? I don%26#39;t think even your limited program is feasible if you want to enjoy yourselves - everything will be rushed.
Is there no chance you could extend you stay? If not, I would suggest looking at one of Europe%26#39;s smaller cities, where you might just feel you have done it justice. Venice?

Just stretch that day by 96 hours, and you will just get that taster to make you return.
|||
My best suggestion would be to go to Vienna for the day - and this is only for a taster.
Catch the 7:25 flight from Munich - arrives 8:30. Get a taxi from Vienna airport to the city centre or one of the shuttle buses, it%26#39;s only a 20 minute ride.
Spend the day in Vienna. Try to pre-book one of the 1/2 day tours, which can include tickets to the Spanish Riding School.
Because Vienna airport is much smaller, and closer to the city that CDG, you will gain 2 hours transit time. The last flight back to Munich is 21:10.

No June 5th is not a holiday.
Hum..could you split the flights with other airlines? There%26#39;s an Air Berlin flight that gets in at 8.50am from Munich.
If you are on a flight that lands at 10.30am you can%26#39;t presume to be in Paris much before 11.30am and that really only gives you 6hrs or so - and that is crossing fingers there are no delays at all in any of your travel options.
I would look to book a private tour within your very limited time frame.
This Paris forum poste says he can do this. No information other than that.

Michael at Parisfind@aol.com. He is an American who lives in Paris and is highly recommended. I think this is his website

They may all think you are a little crazy (in the nicest possible way) but you could give it a go.
There are two %26quot;jump on jump off%26quot; tour bus companies in Paris. The yellow buses:
http://www.paris-opentour.com/index_eng.htm
and the Red:
http://www.carsrouges.com/uk/index.html
Your only option would be to take lunch on with you and just ride around and see the sites.
Both have double decker buses.
I think any meal you take would be %26#39;on the hoof%26#39; in the shape of a walking picnic :o)
Best option would be to stay the night and get an early flight back to Munich on June 6th.
Or, as suggested above stick to a city nearer Munich and save Paris for another trip.
Good luck!

I don%26#39;t think it would be worth it going to Paris and Vienna neither. In both cases, you%26#39;ll spend as much time on transportantion as you will have in a city where you could spend easily a week and you%26#39;ll just feel rushed. In my opinion, this would be a waste of time and money.
A trip to Salzburg by railways would be much more rewarding - it%26#39;s a lovely city which can easily be visited in a day and there are good connections from Munich. Or if the weather is nice, consider a trip to the countryside around Munich (mountains). Surely, the TA members in the Munich forum will have some good ideas!

BTW did you check out any of the day trip recommendations in response to your post on March 20th in the Munich forum?

If you are on a shortish trip to Munich it would be better to concentrate on that area rather than trying to get to Switzerland and Paris too.

Thank you for all of your replies, however some of you may be missunderstanding me. Let me re-phrase the question: If we could arrive in the center of Paris at 11:30 AM on a Thursday and do not have to get back into the Metro to return to the airport until 7:30 PM, would those 8 hours give us enough time to visit the top of the Eiffel Tower, view the Arc de Triomphe, and eat at a French cafe? That%26#39;s really all I was asking? Might the 8 hours also allow for a short river ride to take in even more scenery? If so, any suggested Metro lines, cafes, short river rides, order or sequence to visit these sites in, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I have been to Paris before, but I just wanted my wife (whose first language is French) to have a chance to see some of these major sites. We have no interest or desire to %26quot;milk%26quot; Paris, or see any museums - we just want to have an enjoyable afternoon in a culture that will be very different than (and a good contrast to) Munich. We already have Day trips from Munich planned to Innsbruck, Salzberg, Garmisch, and St Gallen - that%26#39;s 5 primarily Germanic areas, so we wanted to do one day in a different cuture and language that has convenient flights - The options were Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice, or Florence. The flights to Venice and Rome were not as convenient and did not allow all those hours there, but, let me ask - how far is Venice and Rome from their respective airports? Can you enjoy Rome without having time to do indoor tours? Thanks again.

sandman,
In short, the answer is, yes, you can do all those things in 8 hours. In fact, You can take the RER B line from CDG to the Chatelet-Les Halles station, and connect to the RER A line (direction La defense) until the Charles De Goulle-Etoille station. This will put you near the Arc de Triomphe. You should be able to climb up to the top for a wonderful panorama of the city. Then you can walk down the Avenue Kleber to the Trocadero for a magnificent approach to the Eiffel Tower. The line for that might be long, but if you are willing to walk up tot he second floor, you may save some time. There will be lots of places to eat along the way, and there are numerous posts on this site for restaurant options. If the day is pretty you will have a wonderful time.
You could book ahead to take a Seine cruise with Les Vedettes du Pont-Neuf. They will take you on an hour long cruise from the tip of I%26#39;le de la Cite. Getting to the I%26#39;le will give you a chance to walk from the Eiffel Tower down the river. You will love this!
You are cutting it close, but as long as you know this, it will be okay. Enjoy yourself!

Thanks again, but I decided Paris involves too much time spent in an airplane and the Metro from and to the airport. we will do Vienna instead - shorter flight and 15 minuts to city center. I will now go to the Vienna forum. Warm regards.
