We will arrive in Lille on Sat, March 1 around noon and leave Monday morning on the 10am heading back to the UK. We plan on renting a car at the station and would like to just explore the area. We like pretty scenery, a nice lunch, and a decent hotel - am not much for the big city scene. What is the best direction to head? Is the Champagne area too far from Lille for such a short stay? or what about Versailles, is that manageable?

It sounds too stressful to me to take a hire car out for just a day and a bit, especially in a foreign country with unfamiliar roads.
Why not stay and explore Lille instead? It has plenty to offer for a day and a half. Plenty of shops and restaurants about. Take a leisurely stroll to the old town and wander into the quirky shops or just admire the architecture.
I believe Versailles and Champagne area are too far away for such a short stay for you to enjoy them. Versailles is doable as a day trip from Paris by train, but not from Lille by car IMHO.

Just got back from Lille, earlier today, and will post a fuller account. Please if you only have two days stay in Lille. It has a beautiful old town with some fantastic streets, an excellent art gallery, and a couple of great restaurants that I%26#39;d willingly recommend.

Thanks jeaterhoops. Looking forward to your full account. We reserved 2 nights at La Howwarderie in Emmerin, about 15 minutes south of the city. Will definitely spend some time in Lille plus we have the option of traveling farther out of town as well. Am curious to read your restaurant picks!

MindY : If you have one evening in Lille, go to the Rue De Gard, it%26#39;s no more than a ten minute walk from the Grand Place in the centre of the Old Town. In Rue De Gard find Restaurant L%26#39;Authentique. It%26#39;s a family restaurant, the food is sensational, and the atmosphere was just great too. It%26#39;s rare that I rave about restaurants, I think in my travels I%26#39;ve only posted about two others (in Sydney and Savannah) but this joins the list.

Hi Mindy05! I too will be visiting Lille in March and am interested in any information you may find. I will be traveling in a party of 4 (husband, sister in law, mother in law) and hope to find a few good restaurants. Mork
