Where to stay between La Rochelle and Calais

Almost finished planning my trip for August. We are staying at Godault the first night, Blois nights 2 and 3. One week near La Rochelle, now i need somewhere to stay the last 2 nights. I was going to stay somewhere different each night but i think i might book another 2 nighter again so we can have more of a good look round where ever we do stay. We check out of accommodation at 10 on the Saturday and have to be at Calais for 4pm on the Monday. I have no experience at all of France, i dont know what i am looking for really, except that i dont like typical really busy Gt Yarmouth style holiday resort type places. I just want to experience the place to decide if i like it, and from this years visit we can make an educated decision in the future of what if anything we like about France. When i look on the map Rennes and Rouen jump out at me, (only because they are highlighted) is there anything major to draw me to either or ideally somewhere in between would be perfect driving time.

Go a bit further North and stay in Bayeux or Caen, then spend some time looking at the D-Day landing beaches. Tres bon!

Brilliant, thanks.I continued reading these threads after posting last night and i had come to the conclusion that these could be a good bet, I am slightly confused as which to choose between the two even though they are so different.

As during the day driving between the two isnt a problem i think i shall decide on which ever one i would be able to find a couple of nice restaurants, bottle of vino and lovely pleasant evening walks, so thoughts on that one would be great.

Here are two websites I%26#39;ve recently been introduced to which may help with your August planning:

Bayeux is smaller and prettier than Caen, and has the famous Tapestry to recommend it.

Caen has excellent road links, and a the War Memorial Museum, right in town, is reputedly fantastic!

Either would make a good base for D-Day exploring.
