Is there anything to see in Rodez and is it worth basing myself there for a few days to visit the area? Any recommendations?

If you are interested in 14th to 16th century architecture, Cathederals and ecclisastical history, then Rodez is worth a day or so of your time. The Cathederal is impressive, and especially from a distance as it is set on top of a high hill within the old town:

From there I would go to Le Puy En Velay, a most unusual and interesting city:

And from there, if you have a car, tour up into the Massif Central for some fantastic scenery and interesting small towns and geological sites.

Thanks EssexWanderer. Le Puy-en-Velay sounds interesting. We will not have a car so we hope to travel from Rodez using local buses.

I%26#39;m not sure about the busses in that area, but both Rodez and Le Puy are reasonably large centres so I would expect there will be some form of Public Transport between them.
Le Puy is a %26#39;starting off point%26#39; for Pilgrims going to Santiago de la Compostella, in Spain, so a good centre for walking and hiking even if you are not %26#39;fixated%26#39; upon the religious aspect. It is also famous for Lentilles Verts!!

Rodez itself is pleasant enough; however, in this general area there are probably nicer places - Villefranche de Rouergue is a smaller town with a classic square with a superb Thursday market; Figeac is one of my favourite French towns, with a network of narrow, shady streets and a pleasant river frontage on the Cele; Espalion is a good centre for the Lot gorges. Amongst the smaller towns/villages, do not miss Conques, Estaing, Najac, Belcastel - all wonderful places.
