I%26#39;m not sure what problem you%26#39;re anticipating?
Most car rental pages have car size indicators, even if you%26#39;re not familiar with the actual models.
There are some narrow roads, often in villages where the walls prevent any widening, but generally these are by-passed if they are a bottleneck. If you%26#39;re wanting to visit the village, then there will often be signed car parks easily accessible outside the village centre.
Otherwise, if you have a Michelin map, you can see the roads - anything coloured is generally OK, and allows traffic in both directions at any time. It%26#39;s only the narrow whites in the mountains which you might avoid if you%26#39;re less confident ... but then, you might want to avoid them even in a small car!

thanks so much i was just hearing all these horro stories of tiny roads etc etc. we will be staying in carces which is close to brignoles and driving around there a bit but then driving straight to nice to drop car off 5 days later. so i was worried with all the GET A SMALL CAR advice. thanks

Two problems with a larger vehicle:
--fuel economy, which you know about;
--parking. We had a two seat convertible recently that I was barely able to squeeze into public parking lot spots in several places. Some lots are entirely lined for what we in the States would call %26quot;compact only%26quot; except it felt more like sub-compact size. If we had been in a larger car, I would%26#39;ve had to keep looking. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have problems in parking garages.
The only roads I saw that might feel too narrow for comfort were spots in the mountains and in some villages where I didn%26#39;t even want to take our small car.
